Need help using Ranch Map Builder, opening a saved project, exporting a map, or resolving a map-loading issue? Start with the troubleshooting steps below. When you contact support, include enough context to reproduce the problem without sending credentials or sensitive information you do not want to share.

QUICK HELP

1. THE MAP DOES NOT LOAD

Check:

• Your internet connection.

• Whether other web pages and map services load normally.

• Whether the browser is blocking scripts or third-party network requests.

• Whether the page shows a RanchAssist “Map service unavailable” or administrator-configuration message.

• Whether refreshing the page restores the map.

RanchAssist users should never be asked to provide a Mapbox token. The corrected Ranch Map Builder reports map loading, authorization, configuration, WebGL/dependency, style, and timeout failures instead of silently leaving an unexplained blank map. If the deployment is missing or rejecting required Mapbox configuration, that is an administrator/deployment issue.

2. I CANNOT FIND THE RANCH

Try:

• Searching by a nearby address, road, town, or recognizable place.

• Zooming out and navigating manually.

• Using device location if your browser supports it and you choose to grant permission.

• Switching the base map if an alternate view makes roads or imagery easier to identify.

3. I DREW THE WRONG FEATURE

Select the feature and use the editor to:

• Change its name or category.

• Edit its geometry.

• Change notes or style.

• Duplicate it.

• Delete it.

• Zoom to it.

Use Undo / Redo for recent drawing changes when available.

4. A FEATURE KEEPS MOVING

Open the layer or feature controls and lock the feature after you finish its geometry. Locking helps protect a mapped item from accidental edits while you continue working.

5. I CANNOT SEE A FEATURE

Check:

• Whether the feature is hidden.

• Whether its category/layer is hidden.

• Whether another polygon or layer is visually stacked above it.

• Whether you are zoomed to the correct area.

Use search and Zoom To when you know the feature name.

6. THE ACREAGE OR DISTANCE LOOKS WRONG

Ranch Map Builder calculates planning measurements from the geometry you draw.

Check:

• Whether all polygon vertices follow the intended boundary.

• Whether a line has an accidental extra vertex or detour.

• Whether the polygon is closed correctly.

• Whether you are interpreting the displayed unit correctly.

• Whether the map imagery aligns with the real-world feature you intended to trace.

Mapped measurements are operational planning estimates, not legal survey measurements.

7. I REFRESHED THE PAGE

The active browser session may be protected through sessionStorage, which can help recover current work from an accidental refresh or same-tab interruption.

Session recovery is not a permanent save.

If you want to continue the project later, use Save Project and keep the exported RanchAssist .ra file.

8. I CLOSED THE TAB OR LEFT THE SITE

If the browser session is no longer available, RanchAssist cannot guarantee recovery of unsaved project data.

If you previously saved a .ra project file:

• Open Ranch Map Builder.

• Choose Open Project.

• Select the saved .ra file.

• The tool should validate and restore the compatible project.

9. MY .RA PROJECT FILE WILL NOT OPEN

Confirm:

• The file was created by RanchAssist Ranch Map Builder.

• The file extension is .ra.

• The file has not been manually edited, renamed from an unrelated format, truncated, or damaged.

• You are opening it in Ranch Map Builder rather than a different RanchAssist tool.

Common messages may include:

• Not a RanchAssist project.

• Different RanchAssist tool.

• Newer project format.

• Project file could not be read.

• Project is incomplete.

Do not send the file publicly if it contains ranch information you consider private.

10. MY GEOJSON WILL NOT IMPORT

GeoJSON is spatial interchange data, not the same as a complete .ra project.

Check:

• The file is valid GeoJSON.

• It contains supported geometry.

• The file was exported from RanchAssist or from a compatible workflow.

• Feature properties have not been corrupted.

If you need to restore the entire RanchAssist project—including layer settings, notes, and project metadata—use a .ra file instead.

11. EXPORT PNG / PDF / PRINT DOES NOT LOOK RIGHT

Try:

• Fit the map to the area you want included.

• Hide layers you do not want in the output.

• Confirm the legend contains the categories you want shown.

• Use the browser’s current print/PDF options if a print view is used.

• On mobile, try landscape orientation for a wider map output when supported.

12. EMAIL SHARING DOES NOT WORK

Email sharing depends on the deployed Google Apps Script MailApp configuration and available service quotas.

If email fails:

• Use Copy Summary.

• Export a PDF or PNG and attach it from your device.

• Try again later if the service is temporarily unavailable.

13. DEVICE LOCATION DOES NOT WORK

Geolocation normally requires:

• A compatible browser/device.

• User permission.

• Location services enabled at the device level.

• A secure web context where required by the browser.

You do not have to enable geolocation to use Ranch Map Builder.

WHAT TO INCLUDE IN A SUPPORT REQUEST

Please include:

• RanchAssist tool: Ranch Map Builder.

• Device type: phone, tablet, or desktop.

• Browser and browser version, if known.

• Operating system, if known.

• What you were trying to do.

• The exact steps immediately before the issue.

• The exact error or status message.

• Whether the issue happens after a refresh.

• Whether the issue happens in another browser.

• A screenshot if it does not expose information you do not want to share.

For project-file problems, include the exact error message before sending the .ra file itself.

DO NOT SEND

Do not send:

• Passwords.

• API keys.

• Mapbox access tokens.

• OAuth tokens.

• Google account credentials.

• Browser cookies.

• Private service credentials.

RanchAssist users should never need to provide developer-level credentials to use the tool.

DATA & PRIVACY QUESTIONS

Ranch Map Builder follows a session-first project model. It does not require a RanchAssist account or a RanchAssist-hosted project database for the standalone tool.

The browser may use sessionStorage for active-session resilience. Users can explicitly save a local .ra project file for long-term continuation.

Mapbox, Google Apps Script, your browser/device, and other infrastructure providers may process technical information necessary to deliver their respective services. See the Ranch Map Builder Privacy Policy for more information.

Ranch Map Builder is an operational planning tool.

Mapped boundaries and measurements are not a legal survey. If your question involves legal ownership, property boundaries, easements, title, engineering, compliance, or other high-stakes determinations, use authoritative records and an appropriately qualified professional.
