ABOUT RANCH MAP BUILDER
Ranch Map Builder is a standalone operational mapping tool from RanchAssist™. It is designed to help ranchers turn a satellite map into a practical working reference for the land, infrastructure, access, water systems, facilities, and hazards that shape day-to-day ranch operations.
The goal is not to replace professional GIS software, surveying, engineering, or specialized land-management systems. The goal is to make the map itself useful for ranch work.
With Ranch Map Builder, a user can outline ranch boundaries, pastures, traps, hay fields, crop fields, no-graze areas, brush or wooded areas, and other custom areas. Linear features can include fences, electric fences, ranch roads, cattle lanes, water lines, creeks, drainage, and custom runs. Point features can include gates, ponds, stock tanks and troughs, wells, water meters, pumps, barns, hay barns, shops, houses, corrals, chutes, loading areas, mineral feeders, protein feeders, cattle guards, culverts, hunting blinds, hazards, incident markers, and custom locations.
A WORKING MAP, NOT A DECORATIVE MAP
Ranch Map Builder is built around the idea that an operational map should help answer practical questions:
• Where is the gate?
• Which pasture is this?
• How long is this fence run?
• How many acres are inside this mapped pasture?
• Where does the main water line run?
• Which crossing needs attention?
• Where is the hazard?
• Which structures and water points are in this area?
• What needs to be communicated to an employee, contractor, family member, carrier, or service provider?
Each feature can be named, categorized, documented with notes, styled, shown or hidden, locked, duplicated, deleted, and revisited through the layer inventory.
MEASUREMENTS THAT FOLLOW THE MAP
As features are drawn, Ranch Map Builder can calculate geometry-based planning measurements such as polygon acreage and perimeter, line distance, distance between points, total line length by category, and total mapped acreage by area category.
These measurements are designed for operational planning. They are not legal boundary determinations and should not be treated as a substitute for a licensed survey, engineering analysis, or other professional measurement where one is required.
A SIMPLE LAYER MODEL
The app organizes ranch information into three familiar geometry types:
POLYGONS
Ranch boundary, pasture, trap, hay field, crop field, no-graze area, brush/wooded area, and custom areas.
LINES
Fence, ranch road, water line, cattle lane, electric fence, creek/drainage, and custom lines.
POINTS
Gate, pond, stock tank/trough, well, water meter, pump, barn, hay barn, shop, house, corral, chute, loading area, mineral feeder, protein feeder, cattle guard, culvert, hunting blind, hazard, incident marker, and custom points.
The layer panel lets users group, search, show or hide, lock or unlock, rename, reorder, and zoom to mapped features. A legend is generated from the categories actually used on the map.
BUILT AROUND USER-CONTROLLED PROJECTS
Ranch Map Builder does not require a RanchAssist account and is designed around a session-first privacy model.
The active browser session may use sessionStorage to protect current work from an accidental refresh or same-tab interruption. That active-session recovery is not a permanent save.
When users want to continue a project later, they can save the complete editable project as a RanchAssist .ra project file. The .ra file is local and user-controlled. It can preserve the project’s editable geometry, feature information, layer state, map preferences, notes, and other project information needed to restore the work.
Users can also export GeoJSON for spatial interoperability, CSV for feature inventory, PNG for a map image, Print/PDF for records, and text/email summaries for communication.
RanchAssist’s product principle is simple: users should be able to keep their work without requiring RanchAssist to keep their project data.
BUILT FOR REAL RANCH CONTEXTS
Ranch Map Builder is designed to be usable on a laptop in the ranch office, a tablet in a pickup, or a phone in the field.
The interface follows the RanchAssist visual system: high-contrast black, white, and neutral surfaces; restrained functional color; thin borders; clear measurements; compact controls; large enough touch targets; and a map-first layout where the map remains the primary instrument.
WHY RANCHASSIST BUILT IT
Many ranch mapping needs are operational rather than analytical. A rancher may simply need a current, understandable map showing pasture names, gates, water, roads, fences, structures, and problem areas—without building a GIS database or adopting a large software platform.
Ranch Map Builder is intended to reduce that friction.
It provides a focused place to create a temporary working ranch map, organize the features that matter, calculate useful planning measurements, save the editable project locally, and export or share the result.
IMPORTANT LIMITATION
Mapped boundaries and measurements are for operational planning and are not a legal survey. Satellite imagery, device geolocation, user-drawn geometry, map projections, terrain, and other factors can introduce error. Use appropriately qualified professionals and authoritative records when legal boundaries, engineering, compliance, safety, title, easement, or other high-stakes determinations are required.
